Arabic/Islamic Social Studies Program
It is a 6 year Program in Modern Standard Arabic, designed for kids between 4 years old and 12 years old. The Program focuses on all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Course instructors are professional, dedicated, and employed by the institution.
Here are our calendars:
a. Horizon Academy Sunday school applies Calgary Board of Education’s policy regarding the appropriate class levels for students based on their age.
b. Students will therefore, be placed in levels based on their age on the first day of March following the commencement of the school year as follows:
i. 4-yr. olds in pre-KG;
ii. 5-yr. olds in KG;
iii. 6-yr. olds in level 1.
c. Students who will be younger than four years by the first day of March following the commencement of the school year are not eligible for admission.
d. New students who are seven years or older by the first day of March following the commencement of the school year must take placement exams.
2. Arabic Proficiency
a. New students who will be seven years or older by the first day of March following the commencement of the school year will be placed in classes based on the results of their placement exams.

Academy's Vision of Curricular Expectations Horizon Academy envisions curriculum as a process - not just textbooks and other learning materials - which needs to extend beyond an emphasis on acquiring fact-based knowledge to include skills, attitudes, and values. Curriculum also consists of the teaching strategies and techniques and makes links with what children already know. Direct improvement of teaching and learning at the classroom level contributes to better learning outcomes. That's why our teachers are involved at all levels of writing, developing, and evaluating the curriculum, and we hope the parents of our students and community members could join in to build more understanding, support and confidence in the Academy.
The textbooks used in the Academy follow a clear, well-organized scope. However, the curriculum review and development cycle proceeds expeditiously to ensure that the curriculum would always be relevant and current. This ongoing process of evaluation examines and makes judgements on the value of intended, taught, and learned curricular objectives. These learning outcomes describe what students should know and can do, and they are observable in the course of classroom life through a variety of mechanisms. Educational research shows that students experience elevated stress levels attributed to assessments. As such, HAS has shifted to a qualitative evaluation which eliminates the competitiveness of education and redirects the focus towards learning.
Most importantly, it is about student learning. Provincial directions set by Alberta Education: Inspiring Education, the Ministerial Order on Student Learning and changes to Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT’s) have all influenced the work in the CBE. HAS is shifting assessment and reporting practices to reflect the vision of the province and local education board.
- There will be two report cards; one between Dec 15-Jan 15 and the other at the end of the school year
- Comments will be provided to parents based on learning outcomes not tests
- Student learning will be measured using a four-point scale of achievement (exemplary, evident, emerging and not meeting achievement)
The report card will reflect the following categories: Citizenship in learning, Personal Development through learning, Character in learning, and Academic Success in Islamic Social Studies and Arabic Language & Culture.
